The preceding single, "Mandrill," which is enveloped in Martin Gore's signature moody, edgy electro sound, was written and produced by the artist himself, and was recorded this year at Electric Ladyboy in Santa Barbara, California. The first song we recorded has some non-human sounds in it," says Martin. It's kind of primate-like, so to speak. So we decided to name the song 'Howler,' which is a monkey evolved from a monkey. Then, when it came time to title the EP, I remembered that I had just read the book "The Rise and Fall of the Third Chimpanzee," and I thought that would be a perfect title for this work. Because this EP was also created by one of the third chimpanzees (humans).
